UOW Grading System & Academic Guide

University of Wah (UOW) is a private university located in Wah Cantonment, Punjab, Pakistan. Established in 2005 and formally chartered through the University of Wah Act, 2009, it is recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. UOW is closely associated with Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF), the country's largest defence manufacturing complex headquartered in Wah Cantt. The university campus is situated on Quaid Avenue, Wah Cantt, approximately 45 km from Islamabad. UOW operates 5 faculties covering Basic Sciences, Computer Science, Engineering, Management Sciences, and Social Sciences & Humanities, and has two constituent colleges: Wah Engineering College (WEC) and Mashal Degree College for Women.

UOW GPA Calculator

The GPA calculator above uses the official University of Wah grading scale as published in the Examination Regulations for Academic Programs. UOW follows a unique 9-grade system that differs significantly from other Pakistani universities in its percentage thresholds. Most notably, the passing grade D starts at 40% (not 50% as at most universities), and the F grade applies only below 40%.

To calculate your semester GPA at UOW, select the letter grade for each course, enter the credit hours, and the tool computes your SGPA using the same weighted average formula that the Examination Branch uses on official transcripts. The calculator works for all UOW programs including BS, BBA, BSc Engineering, and postgraduate degrees.

A critical difference at UOW: the minimum attendance requirement is 80% of lectures delivered in each course. The Vice Chancellor may condone a deficiency of up to 5% on the recommendation of the Dean and Chairperson, but students below the threshold are treated as having failed the course.

UOW CGPA Calculator

The CGPA calculator computes your cumulative grade point average across all semesters at University of Wah. Enter your semester-wise GPA and total credit hours for each completed semester, and the tool generates your overall CGPA on the 4.0 scale.

Your CGPA at UOW determines academic standing, scholarship eligibility, gold medal qualification, and whether you meet the minimum graduation requirement of 2.00. The academic deficiency system at UOW is based on annual evaluation (not semester-wise like many universities), with probation triggered at CGPA 1.75-1.99 and relegation at CGPA below 1.75.

The CGPA-to-percentage conversion uses the HEC formula: Percentage = (CGPA / 4.0) × 100. UOW also uses an interpolation method where CGPA 2.5 equals 60% and CGPA 4.0 equals 90% for graduate admissions.

University of Wah Grading System

University of Wah follows an absolute grading system on a 4.0 grade point scale with 9 letter grades. A distinctive feature of the UOW system is that it uses significantly lower percentage thresholds than most Pakistani universities. The D grade starts at just 40% marks (compared to 50% at most HEC-aligned universities), and the F grade applies below 40% (compared to below 50% elsewhere). Additionally, UOW does not use C- or D+ grades.

Another unique rule: the D grade, while technically a pass, must be improved for a student to be eligible for degree award. This means a D is effectively a conditional pass that counts toward your CGPA but blocks graduation until improved.

UOW Grading Scale Table (Official)

Percentage Marks Letter Grade Grade Points
Above 85% A 4.00
Above 79% and up to 85% A- 3.67
Above 73% and up to 79% B+ 3.33
Above 67% and up to 73% B 3.00
Above 61% and up to 67% B- 2.67
Above 55% and up to 61% C+ 2.33
Above 49% and up to 55% C 2.00
40 – 49% D 1.00
Below 40% F 0.00

Critical differences from other Pakistani universities: The D grade at UOW starts at 40%, while at most HEC-aligned universities (COMSATS, NUST, FAST, etc.) the D grade starts at 50%. Similarly, the F grade at UOW applies below 40%, whereas at most universities F applies below 50%. This means UOW students in the 40-49% range receive a D rather than an F, which is significantly more lenient on the failure threshold but carries the mandatory improvement requirement.

D grade must be improved: A D grade at UOW is mandatory to improve for becoming eligible for the award of degree. This makes it effectively a conditional pass. The grade counts in your CGPA at 1.00 grade points, but you cannot graduate with any D grades remaining on your transcript.

No C- or D+ grades: Unlike the standard HEC 11-grade system, UOW uses only 9 grades. There are no C- (1.66) or D+ (1.33) grades, which means there is a direct jump from C (2.00 grade points) to D (1.00 grade points) with no intermediate values.

Incomplete (I) grade: Not counted in CGPA calculation. Assigned in special circumstances and must be resolved within the stipulated time.

Assessment Weightage at UOW

UOW uses different assessment structures depending on whether the course is theory-only, theory with practical, or practical-only:

Theory-Only Courses

Component Weightage
Assignments 5 – 10%
Quizzes 7.5 – 15%
Mid-Semester Examination 20 – 30%
Semester Project 0 – 20%
Sessional Total 55%
End-Semester Examination 45%
Total 100%

Theory + Practical Courses

Component Weightage
Theory (Sessional + End-Semester) 75%
Practical Sessional 15%
Practical Viva/Oral 10%
Total 100%

Practical-Only Courses

Component Weightage
Sessional 40%
Viva/Oral 60%
Total 100%

The end-semester examination at UOW carries 45% weightage for theory courses, which is slightly lower than the 50% standard at many other universities. This gives more weight to continuous assessment throughout the semester. Results are generated through the AVICENNA system and must be submitted within five days of the examination paper.

How to Calculate GPA at UOW

GPA at University of Wah is referred to as SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average). It uses the standard credit-weighted average formula:

SGPA = Sum of (Course Credit Hours × Grade Points Earned) ÷ Total Credit Hours of the Semester

One credit hour at UOW equals 1 hour of theory lecture or 2-3 hours of practical work per week for the entire semester.

GPA Calculation Example

Course Credit Hours Marks (%) Grade Grade Points Quality Points
Engineering Mathematics 3 88% A 4.00 12.00
Programming Fundamentals 4 75% B+ 3.33 13.32
English Composition 3 69% B 3.00 9.00
Islamic Studies 2 82% A- 3.67 7.34
Pakistan Studies 3 57% C+ 2.33 6.99

Step 1: Calculate quality points for each course. For Engineering Mathematics: 4.00 × 3 = 12.00 quality points.

Step 2: Total quality points = 12.00 + 13.32 + 9.00 + 7.34 + 6.99 = 48.65

Step 3: Total credit hours = 3 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 15

Step 4: SGPA = 48.65 ÷ 15 = 3.24

This student's semester GPA is 3.24, which is above the 2.00 minimum for good standing and above the 1.75 probation threshold.

How to Calculate CGPA at UOW

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) at UOW aggregates all courses across all semesters:

CGPA = Sum of (Credit Hours × Grade Points for all courses in all semesters) ÷ Total Credit Hours of all Semesters

When a course is improved, the previous grade is cancelled and the latest grade earned is substituted for CGPA computation, regardless of whether the new grade is higher or lower. This is different from universities where only the better grade counts.

CGPA Calculation Example

Semester Credit Hours Total Quality Points SGPA
Semester 1 15 48.65 3.24
Semester 2 18 54.00 3.00

CGPA: Total Quality Points = 48.65 + 54.00 = 102.65. Total Credit Hours = 15 + 18 = 33. CGPA = 102.65 ÷ 33 = 3.11

CGPA to Percentage Conversion

Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100

A CGPA of 3.11 converts to (3.11 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 77.75%.

CGPA Percentage Academic Standing
4.00 100% Highest Distinction / Gold Medal
3.50 87.5% Merit Scholarship Eligible
3.00 75% Good Standing
2.50 62.5% Need-Based Scholarship Eligible
2.00 50% Minimum for Graduation
1.75 43.75% Probation Threshold
Below 1.75 Below 43.75% Relegation / Dismissal Risk

Academic Standing and Probation at UOW

University of Wah evaluates academic standing on an annual basis (not semester-wise), which is different from many Pakistani universities. The system progresses from probation to relegation to academic dismissal.

Status Condition Consequence
Probation CGPA between 1.75 and 1.99 at end of an academic year Warning. Student must raise CGPA above 2.00.
Relegation CGPA below 1.75 at end of any academic year Not promoted. Must repeat/improve courses.
Academic Dismissal Fails to achieve CGPA of 2.00 at end of the relegation year Removed from university rolls. Ceases to be a registered student.
Struck Off Does not attend two semesters without contact with the university Name struck off from rolls. May seek re-admission in the same semester when offered.

Re-admission after dismissal: Students dismissed on academic grounds may be re-admitted to the first semester once, without going through the full admission process. This is a one-time opportunity.

Maximum Residency (Degree Duration Limits)

Program Maximum Residency
BS (Hons) / BBA / BSAF / BT / BSc Engineering 6 academic years
Master's degree (MA/MSc/MBA) 3 academic years
B.Ed / M.Ed 1.5 academic years

Exceeding the maximum residency means the student ceases to be on the university roll. For BS/BSc Engineering programs, frozen and dropped semesters count toward the maximum residency. For MA/MSc/M.Ed programs, they do not count.

Repeat Course and Improvement Policy at UOW

D Grade Improvement (Mandatory): The D grade must be improved for degree eligibility. A student cannot graduate with any D grades remaining in courses required for the degree.

Grade Improvement Rules: A student can only improve grades lower than B. However, the improved grade cannot exceed B (3.00 grade points). This means even if you score 90% in the improvement attempt, the maximum grade recorded will be B. This cap prevents students from using improvement attempts to significantly inflate their CGPA.

Improvement Limit: A student is not allowed to improve their CGPA once they attain a minimum of 2.00 CGPA after the minimum residency period, provided there are no F grades remaining in courses required for the degree. This means improvement is only for students who need it, not for those already meeting graduation requirements.

Grade Replacement: When a course is improved, the previous grade is cancelled and the latest grade is substituted for CGPA computation. Unlike many universities where only the better grade counts, at UOW the new grade always replaces the old one, even if it is lower. This carries risk for students who retake a course and perform worse.

Lower semester courses: A student can appear in final semester examinations while carrying courses from lower semesters. However, the final semester result is not declared until all lower semester courses are cleared.

Semester System and Credit Hours at UOW

UOW operates on a two-semester academic calendar (Fall and Spring) with an optional summer semester. Regular semesters are 20 weeks long (including teaching, examinations, and semester break), while the summer semester runs for 10-12 weeks. The mid-semester examination is held after 8-9 weeks of teaching (or 4-5 weeks in summer).

One credit hour equals 1 hour of theory lecture or 2-3 hours of practical work per week for the entire semester. UOW enforces 80% attendance with the Vice Chancellor authorized to condone up to 5% deficiency on the recommendation of the Dean and Chairperson.

Semester freezing is permitted for a maximum of 2 semesters during the entire program. Freezing before course registration requires payment of 5% tuition fee for program continuation. Dropping a semester after registration (but before end-semester exams) requires Dean approval and the fee is not refunded or carried forward.
