LUMS Grading System & Academic Guide

Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) is a federally chartered, not-for-profit private university located in DHA, Lahore Cantt. Established in 1985, LUMS operates five schools: Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB), Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences (MGSHSS), Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL), and Syed Ahsan Ali & Syed Maratib Ali School of Education (SOE). LUMS offers 19+ undergraduate programs requiring 130–162 credit hours for graduation, with the academic system modeled on leading US research universities.

LUMS GPA Calculator

The GPA calculator above uses the official LUMS grading scale sourced from the LUMS Undergraduate Student Handbook 2023-2024. LUMS primarily uses relative grading (bell curve) where your letter grade depends on class performance relative to your peers. However, the A+ and F grades are always assigned on an absolute basis. Some instructors or specific courses may also use absolute grading for all grades.

To calculate your semester GPA at LUMS, select the letter grade for each course and enter the credit hours. The calculator applies the same weighted average formula used by the LUMS Registrar's Office (available on Zambeel). Standard LUMS courses carry 3 or 4 credit hours, with lab courses typically at 1 credit hour.

A key difference at LUMS is that A+ carries the same grade points as A (both 4.00). Getting an A+ does not boost your GPA above 4.00 — it is purely a distinction mark.

LUMS CGPA Calculator

The CGPA calculator computes your cumulative grade point average across all semesters at LUMS. Your CGPA determines academic standing, graduation eligibility, scholarship retention, and Latin Honors classification. Undergraduate students need a minimum CGPA of 2.00 for graduation and must complete all requirements of at least one major.

When a course is repeated at LUMS (allowed only for C- or lower grades), the new grade replaces the old one for GPA calculation. However, the original grade remains visible on the transcript with an R notation.

LUMS Grading System

LUMS uses a 12-grade scale on the 4.0 GPA system. The grade point values follow the US standard (.7/.3 increments) rather than the HEC standard (.67/.33). This means an A- at LUMS is worth 3.70 grade points, not 3.67 as at most other Pakistani universities.

LUMS Grading Scale

Letter Grade Grade Points Grading Method
A+ 4.00 Always absolute
A 4.00 Relative
A- 3.70 Relative
B+ 3.30 Relative
B 3.00 Relative
B- 2.70 Relative
C+ 2.30 Relative
C 2.00 Relative
C- 1.70 Relative
D+ 1.30 Relative
D 1.00 Relative (minimum passing grade)
F 0.00 Always absolute

A+ equals A: Both A+ and A carry 4.00 grade points. An A+ is a distinction mark for exceptional performance, but it does not raise GPA above 4.00. This means a student with all A+ grades has the same CGPA (4.00) as a student with all A grades.

US-style grade points: LUMS uses .70 and .30 increments (3.70, 3.30, 2.70, 2.30, 1.70, 1.30) instead of the .67 and .33 values used by most HEC-aligned Pakistani universities. This is a small but important difference — getting an A- at LUMS gives you 3.70, which is 0.03 higher than the 3.67 you would get at COMSATS, GIKI, or Air University.

Relative grading: In most LUMS courses, your letter grade is determined by your performance relative to the class. A histogram of marks is used to assign grade ranges. This means your actual percentage score does not directly translate to a fixed letter grade — it depends on how the entire class performed.

Special Grades at LUMS

Notation Meaning GPA Impact
W Withdrawn. Course withdrawal between 6th and 12th week of semester. Not counted in GPA. Appears on transcript permanently. Maximum 6 individual W grades allowed throughout the entire undergraduate program.
I Incomplete. Awarded when student cannot complete course requirements due to valid reasons. Not counted in GPA until resolved. Must be completed within specified time or converts to F.
P Pass. For courses taken under Pass/Fail option. Not counted in GPA. Earns credit hours.
R Repeat notation. Marks original grade when a course is repeated. Original grade excluded from GPA. New grade replaces it.

Maximum 6 W grades: Throughout the entire undergraduate program, a student can withdraw from a maximum of 6 individual courses with W on transcript. This limit does not apply when all courses in a semester are withdrawn simultaneously due to extenuating circumstances. The W grade remains permanently visible on the transcript even if the course is completed later.

How to Calculate GPA at LUMS

SGPA = Total Quality Points Earned in the Semester ÷ Total Credit Hours of the Semester

Quality points for each course are calculated by multiplying the grade point value by the credit hours. I, W, and P grades are excluded from GPA calculations.

GPA Calculation Example

Course Credit Hours Grade Grade Points Quality Points
ECON 100 — Principles of Economics 4 A- 3.70 14.80
MATH 101 — Calculus I 4 B+ 3.30 13.20
CS 100 — Introduction to Computing 3 B 3.00 9.00
SS 100 — Writing & Communication 4 A 4.00 16.00
SS 102 — Pakistan Studies 2 B- 2.70 5.40

Total quality points: 14.80 + 13.20 + 9.00 + 16.00 + 5.40 = 58.40

Total credit hours: 4 + 4 + 3 + 4 + 2 = 17

SGPA: 58.40 ÷ 17 = 3.44

How to Calculate CGPA at LUMS

CGPA = Total Quality Points from All Semesters ÷ Total Credit Hours from All Semesters

When a course is repeated (allowed only for C- or lower grades), the original grade is excluded from CGPA and replaced by the new grade. Both grades appear on the transcript, with the original marked R.

CGPA Calculation Example

Semester Credit Hours Total Quality Points SGPA
Fall Year 1 17 58.40 3.44
Spring Year 1 16 52.80 3.30
Fall Year 2 18 63.00 3.50

CGPA: (58.40 + 52.80 + 63.00) ÷ (17 + 16 + 18) = 174.20 ÷ 51 = 3.42

CGPA to Percentage Conversion

Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100

A CGPA of 3.42 converts to 85.5%.

Academic Standing and Probation at LUMS

LUMS uses a multi-step academic standing system based on CGPA.

Academic Standing Table

CGPA Academic Standing
3.60 – 4.00 Dean's Honor List eligible (requires 32+ credit hours in the academic year)
2.00 – 3.59 Good standing
Below 2.00 Academic probation

Dean's Honor List: Requires a CGPA of 3.60 or higher and completion of at least 32 credit hours in the academic year (excluding summer). Freshmen may have slightly different credit requirements. This threshold (3.60) is higher than most Pakistani universities which use 3.50.

Probation: A student whose CGPA falls below 2.00 at the end of a Fall or Spring semester is placed on academic probation. Students on probation must meet with their Academic Advisor for mandatory advisement. The probationary status remains the same even after taking a semester off.

Separation: Two consecutive probations may lead to separation (being dropped from the university). A separated student may apply for readmission under specific conditions.

Latin Honors at LUMS

LUMS is one of the few Pakistani universities that awards Latin Honors at graduation, following the US academic tradition.

Honor CGPA Requirement
Summa Cum Laude 3.80 and above
Magna Cum Laude 3.50 – 3.79
Cum Laude 3.30 – 3.49

Course Repeat and Grade Improvement at LUMS

Repeat eligibility: Students can only repeat courses in which they earned a C- or lower grade. Courses with C or above cannot be repeated for grade improvement. This is stricter than most Pakistani universities which allow repeating any course below B-.

Grade replacement: When a course is repeated, the new grade replaces the old grade in CGPA calculation. The original grade remains on the transcript marked with R notation. Only the new grade counts toward GPA.

Thrice failure: LUMS has a specific policy for students who fail a core course three times, which is handled by the respective school/department.

Course audit: Students may audit courses under specific conditions. Audited courses do not receive a letter grade and do not count toward credit hours or GPA.

Add/Drop, Withdrawal, and Enrollment at LUMS

Add/Drop period: 14 days total — starting 3 calendar days before the semester and continuing until the 11th day. Courses dropped during this period do not appear on the transcript.

Drop Only period: From 9th day until Friday of the 5th week. Dropped courses do not appear on the transcript.

Withdrawal period: After the Drop Only deadline until the end of the 12th week. A W grade is assigned and appears permanently on the transcript. Maximum 6 individual W grades allowed throughout the entire program.

After 12th week: No withdrawal option. Discontinuing a course results in F grade or a grade based on the percentage of instruments attempted.

Semester System and Credit Hours at LUMS

LUMS operates two regular semesters — Fall (late August to late December) and Spring (mid-January to late May) — each 16 weeks long with 30 class sessions. An optional 8-week summer semester is divided into two sessions. Students are categorized by credits earned: First Year (0–30), Sophomore (31–60), Junior (61–94), Senior (95–130+). For BA-LLB, the program extends to 162 credit hours over 5 years (max 7 years).

Normal semester load is 15–18 credit hours. The maximum program duration is 6 consecutive calendar years from admission for BA/BSc/BS programs and 7 years for BA-LLB. Freshmen are not allowed to take their first semester off.

Transfer students must complete at least 72 of the 130 required credit hours at LUMS. A maximum of 58 credit hours can be transferred, but transferred grades are not used in CGPA computation at LUMS.
