GIKI Grading System & Academic Guide
Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI) is an autonomous, fully residential engineering university located in Topi, Swabi District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Established in 1993 under the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute Act, GIKI is recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and accredited by Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC). The institute operates three faculties — Engineering Sciences, Computer Science & Engineering, and Management Sciences — offering BS, MS, and PhD programs exclusively in engineering and technology disciplines. GIKI requires 134–135 credit hours for BS degree completion within a 4-to-6-year window.
GIKI GPA Calculator
The GPA calculator above uses the official GIKI grading scale sourced from the GIK Institute Academic Setup and Student Handbook 2021–22. GIKI awards 11 letter grades from A to D, plus F, with each grade carrying a fixed Grade Points per Credit (GPC) value on a 4.00 scale. The end-of-semester examination typically carries 50% weightage of a course, with the remaining 50% distributed across mid-semester tests, quizzes, home assignments, case studies, lab reports, and vivas at the course instructor's discretion.
To calculate your semester GPA at GIKI, select the letter grade for each course and enter the credit hours. The calculator applies the same weighted average formula used by the GIKI Examinations Office. I and W grades are not counted in GPA calculations.
GIKI CGPA Calculator
The CGPA calculator computes your cumulative grade point average across all semesters at GIKI. Your CGPA determines academic standing and graduation eligibility. Undergraduate students need a minimum CGPA of 2.00 for degree award. Academic standing at GIKI follows a 4-tier classification: Excellent (3.50+), Very Good (3.00–3.49), Satisfactory (2.00–2.99), and Probation (below 2.00).
When a course is repeated at GIKI, all grades appear on the transcript. However, only the latest grade is counted toward CGPA — even if the latest grade is lower than the earlier one. This is a critical difference from most Pakistani universities where the highest grade is counted.
GIKI Grading System
GIKI uses an 11-grade absolute grading scale on the 4.00 GPA system. The percentage thresholds at GIKI differ from the standard HEC scale, with non-standard ranges for C+, C, and C- grades.
GIKI Grading Scale
| Letter Grade | Percentage Range | Grade Points (GPC) | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 85% – 100% | 4.00 | Excellent |
| A- | 80% – 84.99% | 3.67 | |
| B+ | 75% – 79.99% | 3.33 | |
| B | 70% – 74.99% | 3.00 | Good |
| B- | 65% – 69.99% | 2.67 | |
| C+ | 61% – 64.99% | 2.33 | |
| C | 58% – 60.99% | 2.00 | Satisfactory |
| C- | 55% – 57.99% | 1.67 | |
| D+ | 53% – 54.99% | 1.33 | |
| D | 50% – 52.99% | 1.00 | Poor |
| F | Below 50% | 0.00 | Fail. Must repeat entire course. |
No A+ grade: Unlike many Pakistani universities, GIKI does not award an A+ grade. The highest achievable letter grade is A (4.00), starting at 85%. This means even a perfect 100% score earns the same grade points as 85%.
Non-standard percentage ranges: GIKI's percentage thresholds differ from the HEC standard. The C+ grade starts at 61% (not 66%), C at 58% (not 61%), and C- at 55% (not 58%). The A grade requires only 85% (not 90% as in many universities). These lower thresholds reflect the institute's rigorous engineering curriculum.
Special Grades at GIKI
| Notation | Meaning | GPA Impact |
|---|---|---|
| I | Incomplete. Awarded when student could not appear in final exam due to valid medical reasons, or when a minor course component is outstanding. | Not counted in GPA. Must complete within first 2 weeks of next semester. After that, automatically converts to F. |
| W | Withdrawn. Awarded for course withdrawal between 4th and 10th week of the semester. | Not counted in GPA. Withdrawal after 10th week results in F grade instead. |
I grade deadline: GIKI gives only 2 weeks at the start of the next semester to complete outstanding requirements for an I grade. This is shorter than most Pakistani universities which allow 4 weeks. Students cannot re-register for a course in which they hold an I grade.
How to Calculate GPA at GIKI
GPA = Total Grade Points Earned in the Semester ÷ Total Credit Hours of the Semester
Grade points for each course are calculated by multiplying the Grade Points per Credit (GPC) value by the credit hours of that course. The GPA represents the ratio of total grade points earned to total credits attempted, with a maximum possible GPA of 4.00.
GPA Calculation Example
| Course | Credit Hours | Grade | GPC | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Calculus I (MT-101) | 3 | A- | 3.67 | 11.01 |
| Programming Fundamentals (CS-101) | 4 | B+ | 3.33 | 13.32 |
| Applied Physics (PH-101) | 3 | B | 3.00 | 9.00 |
| English Composition (HU-101) | 3 | A | 4.00 | 12.00 |
| Engineering Drawing (ME-101) | 2 | B- | 2.67 | 5.34 |
Total quality points: 11.01 + 13.32 + 9.00 + 12.00 + 5.34 = 50.67
Total credit hours: 3 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 15
GPA: 50.67 ÷ 15 = 3.38
How to Calculate CGPA at GIKI
CGPA = Total Grade Points Earned in All Semesters ÷ Total Credit Hours of All Semesters
Critical rule: When courses are repeated at GIKI, only the latest grade counts toward CGPA — even if it is lower than the previous grade. This is different from most Pakistani universities where the highest grade is used. All attempts remain visible on the transcript.
CGPA Calculation Example
| Semester | Credit Hours | Total Quality Points | GPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 15 | 50.67 | 3.38 |
| Semester 2 | 17 | 51.00 | 3.00 |
| Semester 3 | 18 | 59.40 | 3.30 |
CGPA: (50.67 + 51.00 + 59.40) ÷ (15 + 17 + 18) = 161.07 ÷ 50 = 3.22
CGPA to Percentage Conversion
Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100
A CGPA of 3.22 converts to 80.5%.
Academic Standing and Probation at GIKI
GIKI uses a 4-tier academic standing system based on semester GPA, with a unique multi-step probation process.
| Semester GPA | Academic Standing |
|---|---|
| 3.50 – 4.00 | Excellent (Dean's Honor List eligible) |
| 3.00 – 3.49 | Very Good |
| 2.00 – 2.99 | Satisfactory |
| Below 2.00 | Probation |
GIKI Probation System
GIKI's probation system is based on semester GPA (not CGPA), making it unique among Pakistani universities. The dismissal process follows a 4-step path:
Step 1 — Probation: Semester GPA falls below 2.00 in any semester. Student is restricted to 10–13 credit hours. However, students on probation may register for one additional repeating course (in which they previously earned F, D, or D+ grade) above the 10–13 limit, provided their CGPA is above 2.00.
Step 2 — Warning: Semester GPA remains below 2.00 for two consecutive semesters. Student receives formal warning of poor performance.
Step 3 — Final chance: Student continues with restricted registration and must improve.
Step 4 — Removal: If semester GPA stays below 2.00 for two more consecutive semesters (excluding summer school), the student's name is removed from the institute's roll.
Freshmen fresh start: If a freshman experiences two consecutive probations in the very first two semesters, they may request to start afresh with no credit transfer. This unique policy gives first-year students a second chance without the burden of earlier poor grades.
Course Repeat and Grade Improvement at GIKI
F grade courses: Any course with an F grade that is required for the degree must be repeated in its entirety. Students may substitute an elective course only if the curriculum allows an alternative.
D and D+ grade courses: Students can repeat courses in which they obtained D+ or D grade, but must do so within 3 semesters of earning the grade. After 3 semesters, the repeat opportunity expires.
Latest grade always counts: In case of repeated courses, only the latest grade is counted toward CGPA — even if the new grade is lower than the original. This is a critical GIKI-specific rule. Most Pakistani universities use the highest grade for CGPA. At GIKI, repeating a course carries risk.
Summer school: An 8-week summer session is organized annually for students who failed or earned D/D+ grades. Maximum registration is 8 credit hours per summer. Students pay separately for summer courses.
Course withdrawal: Students may withdraw from courses with their Dean's approval between the 4th and 10th week, receiving a W grade. Withdrawal after the 10th week results in an F grade. Not attending classes is not equivalent to dropping a course.
Course auditing: Students may audit courses by registering in the third week through their faculty. Audited courses do not receive a grade and cannot be changed to credit. A course once audited cannot later be repeated as a credit course.
Semester System and Credit Hours at GIKI
GIKI operates two regular semesters — Fall (August to December) and Spring (January to May) — plus an optional Summer session (June to July). The last week of each semester is dedicated to final examinations, with a mid-semester break during each regular semester.
BS programs require 134–135 credits depending on the faculty. The normal degree duration is 4 years, with a maximum of 6 years. Course numbering uses 2-3 letter codes followed by 3 digits, where the first digit indicates the year, the second the subject area, and the third the sequence number.
If a student interrupts studies for more than one semester, upon return all previously earned credits are evaluated by the Dean to determine their relevance to any curriculum changes. The student may be required to modify their degree plan to conform to the latest curriculum version.
